"The rated life for these LED bulbs is given as 25,000 hrs, average, but that may sound like more than it really is. For example, we are running 7 strings of 60 bulbs each, 24/7. That is 7 strings * 60 LEDs-per-string = 420 LEDs, for 24 hours-per-day * 7 days-per-week = 168 hours-per-week. So we burn 420 LEDs * 168 hours-per-week = 70,560 LED hours-per-week, which could imply a failure rate of almost 3 bulbs per week. And, indeed, 3 bulbs per week is the failure rate actually observed."

Because the leads of the L.E.D. and the copper wire of the cord are different material,s they are susceptible to rust. If any moisture is introduced into the environment of the bulb either in the form of condensation or actual water, it begins to rust. And, the rusting process is very fast. In these cases, the bulb will rust and literally fall out of the socket within only a few months.

I must warn everyone that the Philips brand do not last. I read that the wires on the LEDs are prone to rust. The Philips brand is not coated, not completely sealed and is not air/water tight. Therefore it will not work in a few months. You will waste your money on this unless the store you bought it from has a lenient return policy. Too bad, it's really cool and I haven't found any other brand with the twinkling feature.
very entertaining YouTube video

@iitank55 These were about $17.99 per set when I bought them 3 years ago - definitely not cheap. Very cool, though.

3 yrs of constant use is NOT forever dude

@TheTweak90 True, but it's plenty long enough for only putting the lights up for about a month each year at Christmastime. Now, if I were going to use these lights year-round, three years would suck.
