Yarn forward is a knitting term that is often seen in patterns that are written in England, and it is essentially the same thing as a yard over. Bring yarn forward and around a needle without inserting it into the stitch with help from a knitting instructor in this free video on knitting a yarn forward.

I am trying to knit my first pair of socks!!! I am already stuck in the first bit though where my pattern says the following...
"k5, sl successively 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th sts just worked over 1st and off needle.."
I know how to make slip stitches, but the bit that throws me out is the successively 2nd, and so on bit....Can anyone help me?! Many thanx in advance. Zoe

I've had a knitting book from a friend since 1987, was baffled by "yfwd" and never tried the patterns. Glancing through it again today, I thought "someone will be able to explain it on the internet." OK, so I'm old! I'm so thrilled when the internet helps ME with the things I need to know. Thanks Jan!

@laurenfrehel she says at the beginning of the video that they are the same thing. 'Yarn foward' is the English term, I suppose 'yarn over' is the American version.
(I know you posted your comment ages ago, but no one had answered yet so...)

Thanks! I am about to start a sweater for my mother and the lace pattern on the edge was confusing me a bit. This helped lots!
