One particular announcement is making St. Baldricks 2010 extra exciting for these kids.
Their brothers watching right now
Tristan and Riley Bensons brother is calling. Hes watching online -- the twins are getting shaved and clipped at the St. Baldricks event at Basin Electric headquarters. Theyre raising money for pediatric cancer research.
(Tracie): What did you think when you heard he was on the phone and he was watching you? (Tristan Benson): Oh my God! I just lit up! Our mom told us that she sent him a web cam and that he would be watching. And that just, that really just made my day!
Tristan knew shed donate her hair to Locks of Love as soon as she heard the Dakota United Soccer Club would be joining St. Baldricks.
Thats because older brother Skyler lost his hair to cancer six years ago. Today, hes cancer-free.
(Tristan Benson): One of the hardest things for Skyler was losing his hair. Because he was like Riley. He had a big head of hair and he didnt want to see it go.
Tristan begged Riley to go bald. And just before the event, he agreed.
(Riley Benson): My hair grows pretty fast, so I think in a month, itll be about to there.
The soccer kids are one of several community groups who joined with Basin Electric to raise money for the St. Baldricks Foundation.
The students from Century High School are back.
You may remember Andrew from last years event. He was battling a disease in his eyes and was treated with chemotherapy-like drugs.
Lynn Bruce had his head shaved by his daughter Kennedy shes now been cancer-free for four years. Ali Lengenfelder just had surgery for thyroid cancer a
few weeks ago shes shaving her dad Kris hair. Kayla Hillestad is battling cancer for a second time. She is shaving her dad Tims head and her sister Elizabeth is going under the clippers, too.
Heres Bismarck State Colleges BSC Baldies.
(William Schimetz/BSC Baldies): No matter how old you are, everybody dies young. No matter what your age is. And one thing my dad did have was he lived to be 55 and he got to have a family and watch his kids become adults. Kids with cancer, thats something kids with cancer may not have.
And heres National Information Solutions Cooperatives Evans Bald Buddies. Theyre honoring little Evan Krogen.
(Mark Krogen): Lots of people dont know kids with cancer and I didnt know anybody until my boy had one. Its really great to see a lot of people donating and supporting the efforts to help cure childhood cancer.
John Knox has been the general manager at KEM Electric for less than two months. He decided this was a good way to get to know his staff and members.
(John Knox): This was it. I told my chairman, Im gonna do this. It was an easy decision. Its going for a good cause.
The University of Mary and the Bismarck Bobcats held events at sports games.
And the Bismarck Tribune and MDU Resources Group held their own events on St. Baldricks Day
Of course, Basin Electrics community stretches beyond Bismarck, North Dakota.
At the Dry Fork Station, about 50 men and women shaved their heads, including Sarah Kimes. She donated 24-inches of hair to Locks of Love. When she was pregnant two years ago, she learned she had cervical cancer. Doctors told her to terminate the pregnancy, and she refused. Today, her son Cian gets his head shaved, too.
At Laramie River Station, Randy Scharosch said hed shave a 20-year-old hairdo if his co-workers could raise fifteen-hundred dollars in an afternoon. They raised more than that, and Randy kept his end of the bargain.
At Antelope Valley Station, the Great Plains Synfuels Plant,
and our TSM shops the scene was the same. Employees stepping up to raise money for childrens cancer research.
To Tristan Benson St. Baldricks just makes sense.
(Tristan Benson): It would be an insult to Skyler to say I regret my long hair, because Skyler would be like, I didnt have a choice.
Losing hair and doing it in solidarity with the kids we honor.
