(This ipod has been replaced).....This is the ipod touch 8gb, with no firmware or software modifications. Bought Oct 30 from an apple store.
Final Update: The end result was that this was a defective ipod. The Apple Store Techs tried everything they knew and nothing would fix it.
Issue: The defective ipod will not wake up, it just shows a flickering white screen with black lines, sometimes I'll get the start up screen for a sec, and then it turns off. I can get into the ipod with a reset by holding the home + wake buttons for 10 secs. However, once it goes to sleep again, I keep getting those white screens.
The problem is battery level dependent, and will only show up 100% consistently IF the battery level is 20% or less (u get the low battery message). With more than 20% battery, the flickering just lasts a second, and the unit will actually turn on (for me anyway)!
So if you have this same issue, try the following steps to restore the iPod Touch software (WARNING: this erases ALL data on the ipod).
1) Connect the iPod to your computer.
2) In iTunes, select iPod touch in the Source pane and click the Summary tab.
3) Click Restore to restore the iPod touch to its original settings. (Note: You will need an internet connection for this. The restore file is around 80 MB I think.) Now, if you STILL have the problem after the restore, the ipod is defective. Get it replaced! (Thanks for the suggestion IpodTouchTakeOver!)
When you go to the Apple Store to replace it, make sure the battery is 20% or less, so they can't say it's a temporary glitch and turn you away. (Make an appointment for the genius bar so your don't have to wait!)
Update: My local Apple Store's Genius Bar replaced the ipod today. They updated to firmware 1.1.2, but it still had flickering. New ipod = no flickering! Happyz!

BTW, the new iPod wouldn't connect to YouTube (for shame!). The fix for that problem is posted on Apple's Forum:
