Drastic Measures was written by American composer Russell Peck in 1976. The piece was originally written for saxophone quartet, but has since been transcribed for clarinets. The piece has very heavy jazz and pop influences, with the main melodic material being built upon a simple twelve0bar blues bass line. The technique of hocketing, or passing a single rhythmic motive between multiple players, is introduced in the opening and is used throughout the work. After an aggressive and energized opening, the movement assumes a transient and lyrical quality, with heavy use of rhythmic and melodic hocketing throughout. After this brief interlude the piece once again gains momentum and takes listeners on a fast-paced and raucous ride to the end. Michael Waller
