that has to be a fairly stupid question, but do appliances connected to surge-protection-only still add up to total UPS watts load?

That "AVR" (active voltage regulation) feature is actually pretty important. It means that the UPS can adjust the voltage when it's slightly off-spec, without needing to switch to battery mode. If it's too far off it will still use battery though.
Generically this is called a "line interactive" UPS.
I have the 725VA version of the Back-UPS ES you showed in the beginning. Those don't have AVR. They're strictly "standby" units, meaning they only switch battery on/off, no minor adjustments.

I use a much older model than your first unit, a APC ES BE350u (since 2002). The unit still works perfectly, just replaced the battery in it (rbc35 7ah). Mine runs my desktop for a little over 1 min, which isn't much of a concern since I have a generator. If I were to get a new ups, it would have to be the xantrex power source 400, which is only a 400 watt ups. The reason I want that unit is because of the 40 ah AGM battery in it. That battery will run my desktop for about 4 hours. Great vid!

Thank you for the comment i love my 1300va ups it is a good i was going to get the 1500va but is was $220 the 1300va ups was $186.
