Internet download speeds really jumped when 4G phones were launched. So how does the download speed for Sprint's WiMax 4G network compare to Verizon's LTE 4G network. Lately, we've seen mixed results, so Wirefly's Bob Kovacs put two phones on his desk and ran the test.

  • @wirefly. Someone told me the reason Verizon lte is faster is cause of the amount of 4g phones they have released Ave say once they start getting more phones out the speed will slow is this true? Plus sprint is supposed to be going towards lte right?

  • @tenser626 The more devices you have running on a network, the less bandwidth there is for each device. That's the theory and people said that was the reason why Verizon's LTE was faster than Sprint's WiMax. But the reality is that there are probably as many 4G Verizon phones (maybe more!) than Sprint WiMax phones. Verizon still has better speed.

Yes, Sprint is beginning to build an LTE network - it's a ways off at this point.

  • Did you stop using the Speedtest. net application? I find it to be more accurate. I get 10 mbps download on my Evo 4G but mostly between 5 & 8 on average in the Greensboro/W-S, NC area.

  • @MusicVideoJunkie33 I prefer to use CNET's bandwidth meter when possible, because it uses the phone's web browser. Most people use the Internet with the phone's web browser, so that feels like a more realistic test to me. I find that speed test apps give me measurements that are MUCH higher... I'm a little skeptical about them.

  • Hey Bob - what app where you using for this speedtest?

  • @MrAjayS99 This isn't an app... it's the Bandwidth Meter on CNET (dot) com. Do a Google search on "bandwidth meter cnet" and you'll get the link to this download test. It requires Flash, so it won't run on iPhones.

I prefer this test because it is conservative and it's visual -- it looks good on camera. It also uses the browser, which is how most people use the Internet on a cell phone.

  • @jjredickisabeast I really like the E4GT but you have to see a nice HD video played on the Rezound. I can take or leave the Beats stuff, but the display is killer. The Rezound feels good in the hand, too. And I still like Sense.

  • @wirefly Yeah, i can understand the sense, i had the evo before the ET4G, maybe im on the ET4GA bandwagon and don't wanna see it fall from the best!

  • Save your time:

    Test starts at: 0:57

    Results for both tests: 1:23

Thumbs up for all to see!

  • Y not do a real test like a Netflix test ... not these rediculous speedtest that show nothing to let us see now the phone behaves when doing something real like watching netflix

  • My Verizon data is unlimited too, lol!

  • Idgaf, At least my internet is unlimited :D

  • Glad Sprint is getting LTE.

  • Vzn purchased the, most spectrum when it first became available when analog tv was first going digital. Everyone else gets the leftover LTE; verizon's will only get faster and larger.

  • @wirefly Thanks Bob. I just used the speakeasy. net speed test and you're right it does work better. I'm still getting really good download speeds. I hit 10.12 mbps download last night. I'm still averaging between 5 & 8.
