My piece CITY in Second Life - based on my experience living in Los Angeles for 23 years. From far away the lights look pretty and your star is just over the horizon... but inside the city, life is very different for 99% of people.

The sounds of the city were recorded out my bedroom window off Hollywood and LaBrea between 1-3am; inside the build they are overwhelming. Frequently the sound level in my apartment approached 130dB. The music is adapted from my work 'The Angel Is Aerodynamically Sound'. This work won Honorable mention for IMMERSION in the January 2010 UWA 3D Art & Design Challenge at the University of Western Australia in Second Life.

  • Thanks guys! I must also thank Glyph Graves, who first pushed me to show CITY at Brooklyn Is Watching in Second Life; otherwise it might never have been seen.

  • Some of the comments I've received make me want to note: except for the two whiteout transitions to the photosets [which are also part of the piece], there are no "special effects" used in this film. Everything you see can be experienced from inside the work.

  • Immersive is right, the sound and music are key and to me the music evoked the crying of spirits in a gigantic intricately visualized mesh of inhuman noise - probably a good description of life at Hollywood and La Brea

  • brilliant.
