In 1994, an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were slaughtered in just 100 days in an act of genocide. Meanwhile, neighbouring Uganda was in the middle of what one top UN official would label "the world's most neglected humanitarian crisis." Two years later, a government in Central Asia would begin a reign of widespread, unchecked human rights abuses against its own population. And later still, a conflict in North Africa continues to go unchecked, even as the death toll mounts.
