Cliff Edwards, also known as Ukulele Ike (and as the voice of Jiminy Cricket), recorded George Gershwin's "Somebody Loves Me" in 1924 for the pre-electronic "Perfect" label, known for its chocolate brown shellac. It's one of my favorite recordings. A lovely performance.

My cat Mozart loves vegging out to music, and has consistently excellent taste. Whistling makes him salivate and tends to distract him.

This 78 RPM record is being played on an English HMV Model 101 portable Gramophone from around 1927. As with all early record-playing devices, it uses no electricity.

  • Damn. Where did you get the player, Steve? Wow.

  • @radiomikenyc Ebay! I recommend HMV portables. Not the sexiest looking but they can sound great. and you should be able to get one cheap.
