By giving this video 1 star you are agreeing that Blaine sucks.

I didn't know what to call this video, so I opted for all the following. Take your pick.

David Blaine performs Balducci levitation trick... Not!

How Not to Do It: A 'how to' for Post Production Students

David Blaine uses post production editing to make a very simple 3 inch levitation trick look "magical". This amounts to nothing more than deception to make him look like a better magician/illusionist.

Whilst camera tricks can be used as part of an illusion, this is not the case here. This "Camera Trick" REPLACES the illusion, it is NOT the illusion. Therefore it is a FAKE illusion. No self respecting magician/illusionist would stoop so low, and the ones that do, suck.

There is no excuse for such a cheap (fake, fraud) trick (hoax, lie, con, deception, manipulation) like this, other than
A. He hates his fans
B. He likes insulting people's intelligence
C. He has absolutely no integrity whatsoever
D. He is a poor excuse for a magician/illusionist
E. All of the above.

(Whilst none of this is new news, I wanted a video I could point people to when needed. A video that would remain as a reminder of what a charlatan, Blaine is.)

The real Balducci levitation Trick, as describes here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balducci_levitation is a very simple trick that can be performed by anybody. Its effects, when done right, can be mildly entertaining. Nothing like Blaine would try have you believe.

The David Blaine Levitation Trick.

1. Learn the real Balducci Levitation trick.
2. Perform said trick on the street in front of a small crowd of simpletons.
3. Film the simpletons' reactions to you "levitating" a few inches off the ground
4. Go into a studio and get a crane to lift you off the ground a few feet
6. Get some actors to closely dress like the simpletons you taped in the streets watching your 3 inch levitation.
7. Record your lie, but don't forget to get your actors in view (never their faces though, this would spoil the illusion).
8. Go to a post production suit and edit the crane lifting video and crowd reaction scenes together. But, don't actually do a very good job of this. In fact make it so bad that the only people who would actually believe it to be real are five years old and people with severe learning difficulties, i.e the typical David Blaine fan.
9. Release this on video and air it on TV and forever ruin your name amongst all credible magicians and illusionists.
10. Talk in a low monotone voice like you are a tortured spirit, or in Blaine's case, a complete dick.

From the Internet -
"Blaine used a well-known magic technique to levitate up off of the ground. The technique allows a performer to lift off of the ground about three inches.

But what you don't realize at home when you're watching on TV is that Blaine inter-cut a shot of himself hanging from a crane, which made it appear that he was levitating some two or more feet off of the ground. The crowds reactions were real, but what they saw was Blaine lifting up a few inches, not two feet. The illusion was nothing more than a camera trick.

While the trick played well on television, Blaine made it hard for other magicians who have long performed the traditional levitation. Now when a magician performs the levitation, crowds will often ask why the performer cant lift up two feet like that Blaine guy.

Another problem, when a performer uses such camera tricks on television, it casts a pall on everything else that the entertainer demonstrates, even if the tricks can be performed live. After all, if a performer is relying on a camera trick for one effect, what's to keep him from using the camera again on another impossible-looking, beyond-explanation stunt?"

As the great Bill Hicks might have said, every word out of Blaine's mouth from this date hence fourth shall be like a turd falling into my drink. He is suspect now, every action and every word is not to be trusted.

The spirit of Houdini visited me last night, he simple said "David Blaine, what a dick".

  • I was entertained and that what he's doing...entertaining. What's the problem, did you think levitation was real? Are you really surprised this is fake?

  • @MrBSylvester Your standards must be pretty low.

  • Sure, Blaine edited the lev. to make it appear grander for TV but didn't Angel do the same thing with the water walking illusion? In the shots that are supposedly from the cam he is holding his steps are much less solid because he is suspended.

  • @doireallyneed1 Chris Angel definitely loves the post production editing... Dynamo too.

  • Haters gonna hate!
