Kraków's most important citizen was definitely Pope John Paul II. Born as Karol Wojtyła in 1920, he went on to become the youngest pope of the century, as well as the third longest serving pontiff in history. His hands on approach to his work saw him effectively circle the world 27 times; his influence often cited as one of the key reasons behind the fall of communism.
One of his first victories over the state came with the erection of a church in Nowa Huta. The people demanded a church, and Wojtyła served as their microphone. In 1958 the party issued a building permit, only to withdraw it four years later. Wojtyłas commitment to the parishioners remained steadfast and the then bishop, along with other priests, gave mass in an open field, whatever the weather. Crosses were placed at night, only to be torn down the next day by the authorities. These practices continued for years as tension and violence mounted. Finally, it was Wojtyła who broke the deadlock and negotiated the building of the Arka church. In May 1977, one year before being elected to papacy, the Nowa Huta church emerged.
In 1979, a year after assuming papacy and the name of John Paul II, he returned to Poland in what is commonly regarded as the pivotal point in the downfall of the communist system. He preached 32 sermons in 9 days across Poland, and created what has been called in some circles a psychological earthquake. His brief return offered hope and unity to the Poles, and lit the flame that later exploded into the Solidarność revolution. An assassination attempt in 1981 (now rumored to be the work of a KGB/Stasi plot) did little to shake his faith, and he later visited and forgave his Turkish assailant.
Regarded as a hero in his homeland, in recent years his old-school stances on contraception, abortion and gay rights have courted criticism from liberals across the world. He leaves a lasting legacy, not least in his work to combat world poverty, and his fierce criticism of armed conflict.
