Description: Inflammation in the anal region most commonly develops within the anal glands. These glands discharge into the inner anal region. An abscess in the rectum or in the perianal area can give rise to connection canals -- so called fistula -- that may reach to the skin.
During surgery first the fistula will be explored with a probe to determine its course. Then it will be opened and the inflamed tissue removed. With this technique only very little of the inner sphincter musculature is sacrificed.
