Great news! The masterpiece has just been returned to the family it had previously been in the possession of for nearly 250 years. Art experts said yesterday that they had not expected it to be recovered, despite the offer of a £1 million reward. The painting, believed to have been painted in 1501, was on the FBI's top ten list of stolen works of art. It was found in Glasgow.

Madonna of the Yarnwinder is an oil on wood, featuring the Virgin Mary holding a baby Jesus. Da Vinci completed the work for Florimont Robertet, secretary of state to France's King Louis XII.

The work painted in 1501, was once thought to have been lost, but since scientific work at the National Galleries of Scotland in 1986 the Duke's painting is considered to be one of the few Leonardo's that can be definitely attributed.

  • Great news! I am only sorry that His Grace sadly passed last month before this was found.

  • Leonardo da Vinci was the original "Rennaisance Man". He was not only a painter, but an architect, sculptor, engineer, astronomer, anatomist, biologist, geologist, physicist, philosopher, humanist . . . As a result, there are few paintings. That makes any painting by da Vinci quite rare! I had the opportunity of seeing this lovely work in 2002. Please contact me if you have any information as there is a reward for the safe return of The Madonna.
