Robert Simpson's Seventh Symphony, composed in 1977. A dark and powerful work, a masterpiece in my opinion, which will surely be heard more often in the future.
Performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vernon Handley.
Superb stuff. I'm just discovering Simpson via (what else?) the Hyperion symphonies box set and this is my favourite of the ones I've heard so far. It's impressive how he makes dissonance so compelling. I do wonder, though, whether the finale's transition from frenzy to airless inertia was consciously inspired by Vaughan Williams's 6th?
Great work. I'm a big Simpson fan. Handley has done a outstanding job by recording all the Symphonies. Next to that a big applause for the recording engineers of Hyperion. I'am glad that they did it and not the people of Chandos.
Actually the entire 4th minute reminds me of Rach's first in D minor...
