  • I was the business-suited swimmer in the women's freestyle relay version of these promos. I'd love to find a copy!

  • Would you be interested in telling everyone how the filming was?

  • This promo was a disaster for McDonalds. After the 13 Soviet Bloc countries boycotted the '84 Summer Games, the U.S. won medals in every event. McDonalds ended up giving away $300 million in free food.

My family collected the game cards, and won lots of free food during the Olympics. On our '84 vacation to Florida, we stopped & ate at a lot of McDonalds, until I was sick of Big Macs.

Also, what the heck is that guy in the commercial doing on the uneven bars? That's a women's event!

  • "Wow. A baby and a free burger. Could this be the best day of my life?"

  • If you read the rules and disclaimer at about 0:11 it says 1988 which would have been the Seoul games. I remember them also having this promotion in 1996. I wonder if they will have one this year for the London games?

  • I was 10 years old in 1984. My family rarely ate at Mcdonald's, but that summer I ate there almost every day. Big Macs, fries and cola flowed through my veins that wonderful wonderful summer.

  • Should have been more like "If the U.S. wins, McDonald's loses!" This almost put them into bankruptcy due to the Soviet boycott. Not to mention dumbass teens were giving away cards at a time to about anyone who asked.

  • @jjmfrees "I like those odds"

  • I will personally spit in every 50th burger!

  • If you had the ticket for the men's 200-meter sprint, you got an entire meal on the house; the Americans swept the medals, led by Carl Lewis. :-)

  • Imagine if you were an Olympic athlete and had one of those tokens. "I'm not doing this for the medal, I'm not doing this for the US, I'm doing this for a Big Mac afterwards."

  • I also remember the disaster of the boycott, but "he who laughs last, laughs loudest." I watched a segment on the news where McD's said they meant to honor this promo even though they knew it was going to cost them those millions, just to court loyal customers in the long run. Smart? Oh yeah! The food is addictive! I know I'm hooked on Big Mac's and Filet o' Fish sandwiches. That company is filled with marketing genius.

  • I remember seeing the Summer Olympics Games on the McDonald's television commercial. That's on the way back in the summer of 1984. I was one years old. We lived in Cody, Wyoming.

  • @mst3kanita coming up next: an hour long episode of Mama's Family
