The unlock via iTunes is a unique code for each iPhone and no one outside Apple knows exactly what values are used to generate the code.
Because the unlock via iTunes is permanent, there is no need to jailbreak just to apply a software unlock any longer. This is why your iPhone boots properly now.
The unlock codes sent via iTunes have been analysed by the devteam in the past but without some serious increase in computing power it would take years to try and reverse engineer the unlock codes
