" Grace! Your mom's on the phone!"
I closed my journal and went into the kitchen. Nanna handed me the phone and went into the living room. I sat at the dinner table before I spoke.
" Hey Mom."
" Hi honey! How are you?"
I rolled my eyes.
" You would know if I was with you!"
I heard Mom sigh.
" Grace, let's not discuss this right now, I don't have time."
Of course she didn't.
" Are you excited for your first day of high school tomorrow?"
" No. I wanted to got to high school in Wycoff."
" I know that, but what were we supposed to do? Leave you living on your own?"
I scowled.
" Yes."
Mom laughed.
" HHS is supposed to be a very good school."
" Yeah, with Californian, plastic barbies!"
" Just give it a chance."
I got up and got a coke out of the fridge.
" Mom? Can I talk to Kevin?"
" Yeah, but not for too long, they have soundcheck in ten minutes."
I took a sip of my soda as I waited for my oldest brother to come on the phone.
" Hey midget!"
I laughed.
" Hi Kevin."
" What's up?"
I sighed.
" I'm scared."
" Of what?"
" High school."
He laughed.
" I never thought I'd hear the day where Grace admits she's scared."
I rolled my eyes and he continued.
" What exactly are you scared about?"
I walked into my room because I heard Nanna turn the t.v down. I flopped on my bed.
" I don't know... getting lost?"
" And?"
I smiled. Kevin could always get me to talk.
" Fitting in. Geez, all the girls here are straight haired and blonde. My hair's brown and curly!"
Kevin laughed.
" Grace, I'm sure you'll be just fine. Also..."
I heard the phone get switched and I heard a deep voice.
" Hey hottie, are you from around here?"
I laughed.
" Hi Joe."
" Hey sis."
This time he was using his normal voice.
" Good luck tomorrow."
" Thanks."
" Oh, Nick wants to say something."
" Ok."
" Hey Grace. I know you're nervous but you'll have so much fun."
My eyes started to get wet as I turned on my side and looked at our family christmas picture. God, I missed my brothers.
" So where are you guys?"
" Um... I think we're in Tampa Bay."
I sighed.
" I miss you guys."
" We miss you too. Grace, we got to go. I love you!"
" Love you too Nick. Tell everyone bye for me."
I heard him chuckle.
" Will do, oh wait."
" Love you Grace!"
I smiled.
" Love you Frankie."
I hung up the phone..... and cried.
