  • Good stuff!! I know that Ford made some Escorts a while back that had a second unregulated, un-rectified alternator to run the window defroster, but I don't remember which year. However there is this booklet floating around for people interested in the workings and some mods for alternators .. although I *really* like SirHoaxes ideas there!! Check this out tinyurl(dot)com/6n3hj2

Also people need to be *respectful* and *cautious* the output from these things can be lethal!

  • Charlesincharge42,I bought the booklet about 12 or 14 years ago and it's a very good reference. I think it was through lindsay publications. Anyway, It shows how to make a generator out of an induction motor(alternator actually)to produce ac current. I tried it and it does work. Thanks for the link because I lost the booklet tinyurl(dot)com/6n3hj2

  • I've been looking all over for that blue box that JC Whitney Co. had out years ago but I've been haveing a senior moment(day/year)and just can't remember where I put the thing. I would like to show it to you people, it is still in the box with the instructions.

One thing that has come of all this is,I have got rid of a bunch of boxes. But I know I'll be hitting the hardware store next week to replace some of the stuff I threw away.

  • Grate link Thanks for finding that. Another good sorce is the old ARRL Hand books pre

1960's remember Dynamotors I think I still have a few in my pile of forgotten technology shelves.

  • Thank you!! But PLEASE explain exactly how you "cap the diodes". That's new to me

and completely lost me. What do I do to cap them. Do I put a plastic cap on one end\

of the diode, or what? And if so, which end (if it matters). Thanks again, and I'm hoping you find time to respond soon.

  • if i'm not wrong - alternators produce ac voltage which is converted to dc by the diodes - he is basically taking the diodes out of play here?

  • oups! sorry

  • @madmax9009 -- no, not a capacitor. He is making a three-phase (delta-wired) AC generator out of the alternator. If you run capacitors in parallel with the phases, it will burn out the capacitors while it prevents the alternator from reaching max voltage. If you run them in parallel, it will basically do nothing besides reversing the polarity of each alternating phase.

  • CAP, not tap! cap = capacitor

  • You really know your stuff! Thanks for these videos!

  • haha, this comment is pretty late, but you sound like me, dang i need that thingamajigger i just tossed. always happens to me.

  • you got some interesting vids here

this is definately useful to know ..the price of electricity(well..everyfrickenthing) here,im gonna need to do something sooner or later.

  • When he is talking about "taps" he's referring to running a wire from one side of one diode to another diode to make a big loop out of them. "Tap" is an old term that means to place a jumper wire between two places and solder them in place.

Instead of making comments about his smoking and his voice, it might be better to ask a straight forward question, such as "What do you mean by 'Tap'?"

  • I'll never smoke another cigarette again!
