11/2/09- Jacksonville, Florida. Firefighters responded to reports of a fire at an apartment complex. Upon arrival heavy fire was showing from half of the building. Initial reports were people were leaning out of second story windows to escape the smoke & heat. Firefighters used ground ladders to rescue victims from the upper floors. In all it took over 65 firefighters just over an hours to extinguish the blaze. Unfortunately one woman was found dead. The blaze caused over 1 million in damages.
If the building had been up to code, and not been allowed to be "grandfathered in", this wouldnt have happened.
