We planned to stay overnight in Ermoupolis but the Meltemi had a different idea. Shortly after this video we hit the wall hard and decided to leave for a safe anchorage....

  • Yes, it is not evident from the video what dangers were lurking in this situation. Hitting anything hard with a boat can wreck stuff. Was the boat damaged or did your drink spill? What was the extent of the casualties? Were people hurt on board the boat as a result of the power boat leaving or a big wave or what ever caused the "death roll" (is the death roll in the video and if so could you estimated the time in the video?).

  • @nojibnorudder No injuries, stern hit the rock harbor wall a few times. Its a sturdy boat so only damage was to SS stern protection and some overstretched docklines. We had to leave the 'protected' harbor and seek shelter at anchor in 35kts meltemi.

  • @nojibnorudder The roll was continual. We were in a meltemi and it is an anomaly of the harbour configuration that during a meltemi a slight swell enters the harbour. Unfortunately although slight, it sets up the kind of rolling that you saw in the video.

  • @alanjoanhere a death-roll is a dinghy sailing term when the boat capsizes to windward. i looked up death-roll and found this.. i understand that u named it the death-roll because it was a very strong rocking movement but that is not what you would normally refer to as a death-roll in sailing dinghies.

I dont disagree, no one died! It was a particularly vicious roll though. Far more abrupt than anything we experienced even on our second Atlantic crossing (W-E). The weird thing is that the water in the harbour was barely moving.

  • @alanjoanhere yes i would understand that it would be rough sleeping on the boat... but that is not a deathroll.

Looks like the stern is close to banging the dock, is that what hit?

  • @wowthatsailor you might disagree if that were your home and you were on board...

  • this wastes bandwidth and my time
