It's expensive to properly maintain overhead suitable for trolley poles, and Blackpool Transport like to do things on the cheap. Because of this the few such trams remaining are prone to dewiring. The open toppers have kept their poles due to middle mounted pantographs showering passengers with greasy muck from the overhead. The trolley poles clear the rear of the trams and avoid this.

Always went to Blackpool when in Britain, I particulary like the balloon trams.
