  • The reason we love these cold war jets is because they're required hands on pilot skills to fly them not computers like today. Also they were immensely powerful, physically big and very loud. There'll never again be jets like the F8, F4, The Thud, The lightning, Mig 21, The Viggen etc. They'll be sadly missed by all aviation enthusiasts.

  • maybe because it was better than the phantom that replaced it

  • I hate to tell you this we did not spend 3 months in Hong Kong -when we lost the screw--we went into Japan for dry dock-I think Yokohama--it was the year the Worlds Fair was there-I was a fireman-M Division on that last cruise-we also went into DaNang Harbor-for parts for the #3 elevator that broke--hope this helps you --Carl Mills

  • My Grandfather flew those. I will miss him, he had great stories.

  • @Wanobi99 You can't forget the F-14 Tomcat

  • @exenrontexas

    he was Lietuenant J. Kryway

    and yes he lived

  • The Shang broke a screw on the '70 cruise and we had to spend 3 months on the line to pick up the slack. Imagine, three months in Hong Kong!

I saw a series of plat camera photos of an F-8 flaming out on recovery. The pilot got out, just barely before it went into Davy Jones locker. I never heard if he lived through it or not. Imagine your parachute opening below flight deck level.

  • It´s funny when it takes off !

  • I am not really into American jets, I prefer the Russian ones but I've got a hand it Vought they have created legendary planes like the A-7 and the F-8. Both veterans both a little out shined by the Phantoms, but true fighters at heart. May all the brave pilots who died in those planes rest in peace, no matter for what they fought for, they died serving their ideals and that's worthy of our respect

  • Love the shot of the Crusader sniffin' 6 on the '4. Single engine, belching smoke, puking fuel, raw gun fighter and attack jets they were. No disrespect to modern fighters, but couldn't they make 'em smoke or something? Crusader was mean and pretty . . . well, and pretty mean.

  • Well actually modern planes have better thrust to weight ratios than older ones.

You are right thought they required a lot of hands on skill to fly them.
