My understanding is that the "real" is used in the legal sense, which refers to fixed aspects of the land, such as buildings, trees, or fences. It just specifies what exactly they're selling.

In Canada, we call them Realtors and/or Real Estate Agents.

What I always find amusing is how in the States they call them "Realtors" whereas in the UK we call them "Estate Agents".....or "Devious Wankers". ;-)
