A rotary broach tool is shown cutting hex shaped holes in a brass SMA connector tool. The rotary broach and holder are both from Polygon Solutions. Available on eBay. Search keyword: "SMAW1".

  • Thank you for the recommendation and yes, I did speed up the retraction. I didn't go as far as rapid traverse but did go much faster and all is OK.

  • Thank you for the nice comment. I am running this at 1000 RPM and 0.006 in/revolution. There is only limited speeds and feeds information for these broaches. Any comment is much appreciated. I also wonder how fast is OK to retract the broach from the hole. I am retracting slowly but suspect that much faster is OK.

  • About retracting slowly; the broach does not cut oversize. Therefore, there is a very slight interference fit created when the broach leaves the hole. Additionally, if there is no vent hole, a hydraulic condition can be created that may cause damage to the work piece or the broach. The Polygon holder has a pressure relief hole. You probably shouldn’t exit full speed, but you can exit the hole quickly, easily around 100ipr.
