The three candidates running for U.S. Senate met at the University of Massachusetts Boston for a live, televised debate Monday, January 11, a week before the election.

The debate, sponsored by the university's Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, was held in the Campus Center Ballroom.

UMass Boston Chancellor J. Keith Motely and E.M.K. Institute President and CEO Peter Meade offered opening remarks.

The event featured the three candidates vying to succeed the late Senator Kennedy: Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley; State Senator Scott Brown; and Joseph L. Kennedy.

David R. Gergen, professor of public service at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government and director of its Center for Public Leadership, served as moderator. Mr. Gergen is a former White House adviser as well as an editor-at-large for U.S. News & World Report and a senior political analyst for CNN.

  • Mr. Gergen showed just what the problem is many in congress think the seat belongs to them. WRONG it belongs to the people. Good for you Scott. Last night Obama and the Dems met in the dark and gave the Unions an exempt on the cadillac tax. Nice the rest of us will pay thru the nose so Obama's friend get off scott free. Either this plan is good for us ALL or not. I say NOT. Please Massachusetts! Help us.

  • I don't need government to give me relief...I need a relief from government!!!

  • I don't like this host...he cuts the candidates off too much.

  • good point... money. there was millions spent by the republican party at the right time to propel scott brown, and millions spent by the democratic party last minute for coakley when they realized they might actually lose the seat. Independents don't have the support or that kind of money.

  • @bluetablepainting financially as well as morally in many cases

  • If a household overspends (ie more money out than money in) and they have no savings, it can be fairly said that they are *broke*. When you hear someone say the word "deficit" that's code for "broke". The US government is bankrupt.

  • Hooray for Libertarian candidate! He's the only one talking any sense. I recommend the following reads: "End the Fed" and "The Revolution" by Ron Paul.

  • Love everything you had to say, Joe, but one Libertarian in the Senate would not be able to do anything. Sorry, but I had to vote for Scott.

  • I didnt udnerstand the election MA is indenpendent and DEm but mostly indenpendent but yet Joe kenndey an Indenpendent only got like 1 percent or so...so why didnt he win..????

  • he;s outta high school...he has no grace...and no tone no amazing voice or spirit.....

Obama is really the best out there....so far as I've seen.....but suprisingly more than 35 % didn't believe or vote for Obama.....that just shows how much things need tto change...A leader must have unanimous appeal...but through his actions as well as the spoken word...thank you

  • REpublican- not that smart, but physically and mentally represents the people in the way he talks and speaks,,,but does not have the spirit of a true leader,,,rather than fighting amongst each other...give hope to the people...and the independent looks like

  • overall is this the best politicians can do today:??

MArtha - democrats - she is smart but lacks physical grace and dominance that fierce spirit that just lets people believe in you
