How does the mainstream media know the identities and affiliations ( "al Qaeda", moshasim, etc ) when we don't even know? It's not like they carry membership cards with them or something.

That's bullshit.
In Afghanistan, we were in a fight one night and the damn camera crew ran over to our fighting hole and lit us up with camera lights giving away our position.
In Iraq, we had a crew with us on patrol that gave away our position due to noise. We had a guy run out of some reeds and fired on my buddy. He shot him. The Iraqi was still alive but wouldn't show his hands so my buddy killed him. The reporter was all in his face.
