[Viewer Discretion Advised]

On August 2, 1985 Delta Air Lines flight 191 an advanced L-1011 tristar had departed from Fort Lauderdale -- Hollywood International Airport bound for Los Angeles International Airport. The L-1011 was schedueled to do a stop over in between its destination to Dallas Ft Worth Airport. Heavy storms had been hitting Dallas all day. The pilots unaware that they were flying their 152 passengers into mortal danger. As flight 191 prepared to land and unusual force hit the L-1011 causing it to fly wildly. The pilots managed to stabilize the aircraft but then in dropped again, only this time it hit the ground. As the plane touched the ground it crashed into a passing vehicle which killed the driver of that vehicle instantly. Flight 191 continued on for a few more metres before crashing into large water tanks. Out of the 152 passengers and 11 crew members only 29 survive. All three pilots in the cockpit were killed instantly.

The NTSB determined that the cause of the accident was due to pilot error, combined with extreme weather phenomena associated with microburst-induced wind shear.

The NTSB attributed the accident to lack of the ability to detect microbursts aboard aircraft - the radar equipment aboard aircraft at the time was unable to detect wind changes, only thunderstorms. After the investigation, NASA researchers at Langley Research Center modified a Boeing 737-200 as a testbed for an on-board Doppler weather radar. The resultant airborne wind shear detection and alert system was installed on many commercial airliners in the United States after the FAA mandated that all commercial aircraft must have on-board windshear detection systems.

  • @dryline123 Yes it was a very poweful supercell typical Dallas summery thunderstorms/

  • I saw this on the 1996 Black Box documantry that they use to make. How a microburts are so strong and vicious it threw a giant L-1011 like a leaf. Shows mother natures POWER!

  • @aircrashdisaster Mother nature is very powerful it can practically destroy anything on this earth.

  • Omg, hearing the crash at the end :(

  • @dbritton41 it's frightenining. Lets never forget these accidents.

  • @FLT111 The 3 flight attendants that survived, Vicki Chavis Jenny Amatulli Wendy robinson all helped passengers get out of the plane except for Jenny Amatulli who was on the left side of the tail section the left side of the tail section was destroyed and she was badly injured unable too free herself from her seat, they should all be considered heroes In my opinion.

  • I witnessed the immediate aftermath of this crash in Dallas. Our plane was coming in from Ohara in Chicago and we were in a wait pattern with other planes due to the storms. We landed and saw the smoke from the crash out of the window. The plane slammed down on the road and landing gear samshed vehicle to maybe 2 feet high. The plane then smashed into sections. Police came to our home because family thought it was our flight that crashed. It was horrifying to see the aftermath.

  • Delta Air Lines Flight 191 crashed on August 2nd 1985

Japan Airlines Flight 123 crashed on August 12th 1985

Delta 191 crashed just 11 days before Japan 123.

  • You can immediately tell the situation's getting tougher for the pilots as the captain says "Watch your speed". That's when they began to fight to keep the plane in the air, but in that low altitude, the microburst was too powerful.

  • @georgethewondermutt Thank God they put you in a holding pattern.

  • shocking :O

  • Texan is like a foreign language.

  • @Maybebluechels Agreed, tjey should be considered heros also
