Mixing animation and live action footage, Rolling Down Like Pele explores the world of traditional hula and chant. Lush oil paintings, water colors and pencil drawings illuminate sections of three Hawaiian dances in unique and surprising ways. The film was inspired in part by time spent with Sissy Kaio and her halau while participating in a "Dance on Film" fellowship at UCLA.
Rolling Down Like Pele won first prize at Cinedanse Film Festival. It was the recipient of a grant from the National Initiative to Preserve American Dance, funded by the PEW Charitable Trust. Rolling Down Like Pele has screened at the National Museum of American Indian in NYC, the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., The Hawaii International Film Festival, the Maui and Hana Film Festivals, ReelDance Film Festival, and Dance on Camera at Lincoln Center.
