US Army Boosting Troops with Immigrants

STORY: A pilot study is underway. Immigrants on temporary US visas may apply for the American Army.It is the first time since the Vietnam War that the US has enlisted immigrants.But there are criteria. They have to have lived in the US for at least two years. Though it can speed up the green card process – shortening it to as little as six months. [Gen. George Casey, US Army Chief of Staff]: &;This is a pilot program that we are testing and all the results aren&;t in but frankly I am quite satisfied with what I have seen so far from this.&; It is thought some temporary immigrants could hold more skills and better education than their US counterparts, thus filling shortages in medical, field analysis, and language interpretation. [Lt Gen. Benjamin Freakley, Army Recruitment Officer]: &;We have a great spread of both talent, for their education background. We have a great spread in language and we have a great spread in applicants. And so we are very pleased by the current status of the program.&; [Gen. George Casey, US Army Chief of Staff]: &;They will probably serve abroad, most likely in Iraq and Afghanistan at some point during their enlistment.&; The pilot program is open to only 1000 immigrants in the first year. Myself I felt like I had to give something back to the country that was giving me and my family all our dreams. I love America, I just hate how the government has turn on all veterans not just immigrant veterans. SO many homeless veterans. Wounded veterans with little or no help.

@totoynani143 Served on board the USS Forrestal CV-59 and went to Desert Storm. I was promise a fast citizenship. I was a green card holder. As soon as I went in the navy I was shipped out for 6 months. My paper somehow got lost by immigration. I was told not to worry that INS will never be able to touch me. I was deported in 2007.

cz immigrant r more of an american than people who was born in the U.S...U.S born citizen r just plain lucky thats it. just like fucking kings that dont need to work for shit- to be called american.I'm one of those lucky american(but what makes me a third kind of american is, im one of many who had serve this great nation.

it seems like they are only enlisting nerds and geeks! Theres giggly chicks and weak guys, they only want education rather than the passion to fight, hats of to them if they want to join but it seems for the wrong reasons
