A big celebrity face emerges onscreen and utters a nonsense word, then it blacks out... What the heck am I supposed to make of this commercial? It's plain dumb. This commercial minus Jodie Foster would be zero.

Celebrities don't get as ostrisized about being in ads in Japan as opposed to being in ads in America. It's a good way to get extra pay without the "selling-out" stigma.

Add the money, plus the fact that the american actors want to become familiar faces in order to better promote future projects (movies, shows, music). They don't need to do commercials here. We know the actors extremely well. Commercials are a way to reach a foreign market for fans.
