The term sterile means abacterial, which means free from germs; a disease transmission is not possible. Usually when potential germs are killed through heat or gamma emission, substances are described as sterile. Sterile instruments require exact store logistics because sterile things get tainted when touched by hands or other unsterile items and thus an infection might occur. Surgery container, welding foil and other tools protect sterile items from contamination. Sterile instruments are taken from these bins. The taking may only happen with using sterile gloves. Otherwise the instruments are unsterile from the beginning of the surgery.
