Ah, I get it. I probably answered as I did because there was some confusion during that time about what Doc was playing (at least, among those who knew of him but did not follow him closely). As a bit of trivia, I have an audio recording of this medley from a live concert with Charles Forque conducting a Texas H.S. band, and Doc plays just as well at that concert. He is really in his element when he plays music that requires so much "bravado" to get the best effect.

I've heard that no matter whose horn he was promoting his pet horn was an old Mt. Vernon Bach - which is what he was playing when I met him at the Tonight Show studio in the early 80's. It looked rough - the silver plate worn off in many places, solders that weren't that clean, had dings in it., but he blew up a storm with it.
He's famous for having "mouthpieceitis", he was playing a Giardinelli that day.

He did a lot of "I can play this and you can't" bravura stuff that was amazing. He also had a superb sound when he did mellow material. Like the albums with Mancini, etc. There's a nice album he did with Seductive Strings where they spelled his name wrong - "Severinson"

Thanks! This is great. And yes, I Doc was a Conn representative for a while. I think that was after Getzen and before Bel Canto.
