This is from XEXEX, definitely one of Konami's greatest achievements in scrolling shooters, and also one of the least known, unfortunately. The music was done, as per usual, by the Konami Kukeiha Club, and was released to arcades in 1993. The problem with it being so advanced for its time is that they couldn't do a console port, and this was during the time that SFII was casting a shadow over everything else in the arcade scene, so it got overlooked. That, and they made some poor descisions with the world version. If they had managed a Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis port, it might have been more successful, but it would have been EXTREMELY butchered. There actually was a cut down version of the second level included as a minigame on Ganbare Goemon 2 for the Super Famicom, but even THAT had trouble with slowdown.

UPDATED: Out of The Blue From The Hyperspace Jump is my favorite tune from the soundtrack, and this isn't a soundtrack lacking in good tunes. It shows up in level 6, right after "Happy Daymare" (another awesome track), when you start to go into hyper space, which is incredibly cool all around. The hyperspace travels lasts for most of the level, minus the start and the boss, and I got incredibly pumped while all this was going on, what with the combination of a fast song and a blindingly fast level.

Xexex is really great, and now that I've actually played it I'd probably be willing to call it my favorite side scrolling shooter. My favorite top down shooter is MUSHA, and its going to be hard to choose between the two for favorite overall.

  • About what stage this relates to, in Stage 6, which is in Outer Space, at first Happy Daymare plays, and then all of a sudden the background does this insanely cool warp into hyperspace speed, while this theme plays. It works incredibly well =D

  • Thanks for the info! That does sound pretty cool, and makes me all the more frustrated that I ordered the Salamander Collection on PSP from Hong Kong right before Chinese New Year, so it's gonna take like two weeks to get to me. Oh well, guess I'll go enjoy the Gradius Collection in the meantime. I will post what I think about that sequence after we ring in the year of the Tiger, provided I'm awesome enough to get to level 6.

  • wicked tune!! did you get this from the original Xexex soundtrack CD? it is very hard to find and only available in Japan. I have Xexex for my Mame32 emulator and it plays perfectly. It is the only way that i can listen to all the awesome tunes in this game (sound test).

In my opinion, Xexex was the most advanced side scrolling shooting game every made. A work of genius by Konami.

  • This music is awesome! Are you going to upload some too? I even heard the title 'Breeze' in my Salamander Portable.

  • Good luck getting to Stage 6, there's a massive difficulty curve in Stage 3, and from there it just gets bone-grindingly hard. Stage 5 in particular (Virtual Reality stage, music is The Polygontal Energy) becomes near Bullet Hell.
