He was born like that. It's a disfigurement. Though, it's actually worse in the original book "The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux. He has no nose.

I've really enjoyed this. It really gets into the characters and especially the strange obsessive love between Christine and The Phantom. Perfect choice and clips to go along with it. Love it!!
