Chharanagar is an urban settlement in Ahmedabad, dating back to the 19th century. The Chharas are one of the 192 tribes, that were labeled as criminals or Notified tribes by the British under the Criminal Tribes Act of 1871, to solve their law and order problems. These tribes were forced into labor camps by the British and stigmatized as 'Born Criminals'.
In 1952, the Indian constitution 'Denotified' these tribes all over India.
But since independence only words have changed and not perceptions. In the eyes of most people, these Denotifed tribes are still unsocial elements.
