Oh Backlund was incredibly strong. I remember seeing him lift a man who was flat on his back with one arm, like a curl!! He was an animal in the gym and, though he isn't big, he has tendon strength.

Hulk Hogan was a steroid based cartoon character with zero wrestling ability. McMahon was looking for a character who was charismatic to offset Ric Flair. Hogan fit the bill perfectly as he could lie through his teeth about steroids, pretending he really cared about America and the kids.

@muta157 Well said. Bob Backlund was the straight shooty-ish champion people wanted then. Harley Race was no flamboyant guy either. It fit the time as you said..... He held the belt for almost 6 years. He deserves respect.
