Phillip goes to the country club stables, where he sees Beth in every corner. Alan arrives to lend support. After Phillip leaves to break the news to Lillian, Alan's henchman arrives and confirms that there are no loose ends concerning their scheme to convince Phillip that Beth is dead.

  • Chris Bernau was the greatest Alan -- not that Ron Raines isn't a good actor, but Bernau had the right touch of malevolence and charm that made the character so compelling.

  • What's so funny about all this is, Alan always thought Beth was beneath Phillip. And now some 20 years later, not only are Alan and Beth married, but they have a baby girl, Peyton now. My how the times change! And of course, Phillip is out there, crazy somewhere I guess. So sad.

  • How long after this did Bolger leave and Grant come back? If my memories right it wasnt very long after at all.

  • Alan is just selfish, letting his son going through such a pain...My highest respect for John Bolger to play such a nice Phillip, ...,the other Phillip before could have not played so suffering, he was a bit too arrogant...John Bolger talks with his eyes without himself speaking...Philip just got Beth "back" after Lujack died and lost her too, just indirectly for the sake of his stupid father...God

  • As bad as this is, Alan was actually thought he was helping. Alan was convinced Beth was really dead and was just trying to help Phillip face it.

  • I watched this scene as it aired...I can't remember, who is Alan thinking about when the talks about 'love lost"? I will say that I too enjoy this scene more today than when it originally aired. John Bolger was very good - I really think there were TOO many changes all at once (recast Ed Bauer, missing Bauer family members, Lujack dying, etc. etc.) and people just rebelled at all the changes and didnt appreciate his talent at the time.

  • Poor Lillian. She's was so good in this. So sad. Love seeing Chris Bernau. He was so sinister, yet somehow, he seemed almost human, until you found out he truly was sinister. They really did choose two great Alans (#1 and #3). Alan #2 was just so-so. Like seeing John Bolger whom I didn't fully appreciate at the time.

  • I liked Chris Bernau, too, but Ron was a wonderful re-cast...playing the part for the last 15 years. Hopefully the show will find a new network or some sort of new out-let now that CBS has canceled it. The show's last air-date on CBS will be this coming September.

  • So true.
