We read the sixteenth verse of the third chapter of John's gospel account from the Bible every morning hoping to memorize the verse or, as some would say, write God's word on our hearts. Ana shows her progress here.

  • Utterly revolting.....

  • "For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." -- 1 Corinthians 1:18 (NASB)

  • Perhaps you misunderstood me; I'm not revolted by the idea expressed in John 3:16. I think it's a beautiful verse. What offends me is that this impressionable little girl is being coerced into mindlessly repeating her parents words, when she clearly isn't old enough to truly think for herself. Anyone should realize that at this age, children are really just imitating their parents; you shouldn't try to instill your religion in your child until she is old enough to choose for herself.

  • I believe your perspective is backwards. We understand that she is only repeating and that she is very impressionable. Since something is going to make an impression, we want to make sure that thing is true. It's foolish to think a child will learn to "think for herself" with no guidance. It's my responsibility as a parent to provide this guidance. Someone's worldview will shape her character. I refuse to abdicate this responsibility to anyone else.

  • I think it is Great that this little girl is being taught the right way at such an early age. She is a little angle. Jesus is the light of the world and some just can't comprehend because their ways are evil or full of darkness. May God Bless U and your family.

  • I was about to compliment your civility as well. Here's how I feel; Christianity is good, as long as it is practiced according to the words of Christ and NOT according to the modern-day perversions of His words.

I think that "good" only has real meaning when a person consciously chooses it over evil, of their own free will. Of course giving a growing child the freedom to choose between good and evil presents obvious risks, but I say that a person doing good....(cont)

  • Again, here's a fundamental difference in our perspectives. I really believe that Christianity is right... for everyone. It's not meant to provide a pattern to follow so that we feel good about ourselves. It's the lens through which we decide right and wrong, truth and error. Ultimately, it's how God has shown us how to relate to Him. I don't care near as much about how she feels as to how well she relates to God on His terms. By the way, thanks for discussing this so civilly.
