Service to families facing financial crisis in Charlotte

Crisis Assistance Ministry provides assistance to low income people in the greater Charlotte area. When the country was wracked by a painful economic recession in the mid-1970s, a group of local clergy responded in 1974 with a novel idea after faith community benevolent funds, food pantries and clothing closets were overwhelmed with requests for assistance. They pooled resources together to more effectively meet the needs of low-income families in financial crisis, who resides in Mecklenburg County. The Ministry officially opened her doors to the public in April of 1975. At the Dilworth United Methodist Church where the Ministry was located, Caroline Love Myers was the only staff member. During the 25 years of Caroline Myers' service, she guided the steady growth of the Ministry and remained a strong advocate for people living in poverty in Mecklenburg County. She served as the Ministry's Executive Director and despite her retirement in 2000, Caroline remains a weekly volunteer who continues to be passionately committed to those living in poverty. The Ministry's mission to provide financial assistance and advocacy for people in financial crisis remains the same today as it was in 1975, helping them move toward self-sufficiency. The Ministry continues to fulfill the vision of its founders by being an efficient, effective way for the community to pull resources and help people who face economic hardship.
