Here it is folks, my one man band, discretely recorded version of the early '60's Ventures album called, "Going To The Ventures Dance Party".
Technical Information
Electric Guitars and Bass: A Fender Jazzmaster was used for most of the lead and rhythm. A Fender Telecaster was used for the rhythm on "Sweet And Lovely" to obtain a Wilco Johnson (Dr. Feelgood) style. All bass parts were played on a Danelectro Longhorn bass strung with flat-wounds. A Fender Stratocaster with its more positive whammy bar action was required for the rhythm on "Locomotion". I'm quite sure the same guitar was used for the lead on that track as well. With the exception of the Telecaster, all guitars were strung with flat-wound 11's.
Acoustic guitars were used in the recording of "Limbo Rock". The lead was done on a Guild F-512 jumbo 12-string. One channel of the rhythm was played on the same guitar. The other channel of rhythm was played on my own handmade 6-string acoustic - a Marty Tippens Orchestra Model.
Drums: I played a Yamaha Stage Custom 4 piece drum set with maple and birch shells and Sabian cymbals. They were recorded with 4 Shure SM-57 microphones, a Shure Beta 52A for the bass drum, and two AKG 3000 large diaphragm mic's overhead.
Additional sounds: With the exception of my occasional vocalizations, a Roland GR-55 guitar synthesizer was responsible for all the non-guitar-bass-and-drums sounds.
Recording: The drums were recorded to the Korg D3200. Those recordings were transferred to my PC and mixed with Sonar 7 Studio Edition software. The electric guitars and bass were played through a Roland Cube Street amplifier mic'd with an SM57 and recorded to the PC through an M-Audio Fasttrack Pro external sound module. An exception would be the electric rhythm of "Gully-Ver" which was recorded direct to the sound module, as that's the way I hear it on the original Ventures recording, The acoustic guitars were recorded without amplification to the SM 57 mic's and through the sound module. Mastering was done with Sound Forge software.
Good job Marty..........
