USE A CERAMIC KNIFE!!!!! it is sharper than a regular stainless steel knife plus it is made of ceramic which does not react with sulfur or anything in the onion for that matter. YES, sharpness of the knife matters when you don't want to be tearing while cutting onions, because rather than squashing the cells and causing a chemical reaction your cutting through them.

Let's cut it with a hammer!

@allumina It's Wunderbar and that's German, not Dutch..

Haha, nice! That is cool!
Yes you do cry but I never knew why exactly they made your eyes water.
Putting a match in your mouth helps your eyes not water--my mom taught me that. It's cool. Not a lit match though unless you're a hardcore chef. ;)
The shattered onion was also really cool.

@strangekwark my point is to put it in regular ice for a long time and THEN do it, this not killing the cells
Maybe the lemon juice denatures the enzymes that make the sulfuric acid?

@coldcapsicum I think so!

you killed all the cells when you put it in liquid nitrogen!

@markquinn111 That is true and the decrease in temperature made the chemical reactions slow down to allmost zero and it made it impossible for the acids to vaporize. But I have to agree it was a bit gruwesome for the onion and it was not a kind thing to do. ;)

not an episode of myth busters, people, stop mislabeling your videos just to get more views.

Like it says in the video in a comment, and in the discription. I had to!!! It was nescessary to call it like this for a Dutch Discovery channel competition. I am sorry for misleading you, but I can't change the name of the video's now.
