Introducing the South Sea Roller Derby league -- south-east Melbourne's first fiesty taste of the world-wide roller derby craze. Local ladies are gearing up to skate hard and hit harder in their first public bout, in Keysborough on August
28. Entitled THE BOUT FOR BLOOD, the event will see the Dolly Rogers in red take on the purple Cutthroat Charmers, and promises a new flavor of roller derby for Melbourne.
ROCKIN' THE SUBURBS
In just its first year, the SSRD league has grown to more than 50 skaters, recruited from the length and breadth the south-east, and beyond. With a nautical theme that fits
Frankston's beachside vibe, and a cheeky bogan attitude to match, the SSRD is spreading the gospel of derby beyond the hip inner north, and provide a new fix for
all of Melbourne's derby devotees.
INFAMOUS SSRD
Sure they're yet to bout, but the South Sea ladies have already caused a stir on Australia's derby scene. With representatives travelling to Adelaide to promote our
launch at the Great Southern Slam, SSRD was widely dubbed "the best non-bouting league of the competition" -- and they also sold out of all merch. Also featured in the
first edition of Australia's Hit and Miss derby mag, those are only the first tastes of this future derby powerhouse.
HEY LADIES...
You'll know league President (former VRDL skater and proud Charmer) Misty Meaner
for her boundless enthusiasm -- even if derby injuries are keeping her off-rink for now.
Harmin' Miranda heads up the Cutthroat Charmers, as well as the Fresh Meat. Former artistic skater, she breaks walls like poetry in motion. Violent poetry.
Trace Invaders is the formidable force leading the Dolly Rogers. A former speed skater, she hasn't lost her pace, and is an impassable defender.
From the first bout, also watch out for killer jammers Van Haley, Sugar me Sweet, Nurse Pain and The Red Baroness, not to mention some of the blockers to be
contended with -- Breakface at Tiffany's, Sailor-Mouth Sadie and Inkabelle.
And of course, Team Zebra will include plenty of familiar faces from Victoria's derby world, led by league skaters Hurricane Hipi, Mad Dazz Racin' and Battle Tank.
REBELS WITH A CAUSE
"Give Blood: Play Roller Derby" is the slogan for our league's first match, and it couldn't be more apt. The high-energy, highly violent bout will raise money for the Australian Red Cross, with $1 from each ticket to be donated.
And in the lead-up to the event, our two teams will already be engaged in battle: to see which team can rally the biggest blood donation in a drive for the blood bank.
It's a war where everyone wins, and the Australian Red Cross will be present at our
Blood Wars event to provide more information to potential donors. It's the first of
many fund-raising bouts from SSRD -- so stay tuned for some good causes.
