Lawn care is a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States. Rooted in unsustainable practices, it is a reflection of a much larger cultural problem, and demonstrates modern industrial society's hatred for the wildness of the natural world.

  • I agree a 100%, When I was young fresh out of the service i took a job with one of these lawncare co. after a few years I developed health problems and had to quit and I saw the light. I am a total organic gardener now and I compost all veg matter. If everyone would change these lawns to veg. gardens we could ease the strain on the worlds food source but no we continue to grow flowers, lawns and shrubs with no real value.

  • Definitely, you really said it all. Families could be self-sufficient when it comes to fruits and veg most months out of the year if lawns were just converted to gardens. I don't understand why people wouldn't want more edible landscaping around the house!

Just now while typing this I heard an advertisement on TV for a company that will spray your lawn to rid it of weeds...I wish more people would change their lawn and garden habits to take the organic route.

  • People like conformity, they like monotony, they like BORING and CLEAN. Even in their plants and their dirt.

...Wonder why? Hmmm...maybe it's the culture.

  • we cut our grass, that's about it. NO SPRAY BULLSHIT

  • Man, my family is too lazy to put shit in our lawn. We barely even mow it. I prefer the lawn when it has a little length to it.

  • Exactly. I know many places you live there are fines if you don't cut your lawn, some strict gated communities that don't let you plant a garden and force you to use toxic chemicals to ensure a homogenized blandness. What people need to see is the direct result of non point source pollution on their water quality and overall health of the landbase.

  • i was talking about this subject tonight with a friend... lawns are hard to look at and not have an avalanche of judgments... thanks for this
