NECN's excellent meteorologist Matt Noyes features a short summary of the effects the historic tidal surge of Feb 5/6, 1978 at Eastham, MA (broadcast 2/7/07)
NEVER forget that day I was on Thompsons Island off So. Boston The waves were going right over our boat! then the long 8 days before another boat went back to that island. And there was a return to a very old fashioned type of community as ppl helped eachother w/ groceries & digging out. I was living w/ my great gran & grandma at the time. when we finally did get a tunnel like walkway to the store it was an awesome sight w/ mounds of snow that in some areas reached 2nd story windows!
