@711Myself Unfortunately you completely missed the point. The film is an allegorical representation of what Nietzsche termed "Den Züber-alrtunen-gedansk-leimenen" namely the phenomenon of a counter-transmutation which supersedes the transvaluation propounded in Thus Spoke Zarathustra in terms of non elective affinity of helleniocentric/ isotonic diaspora (relating to the increasing rate of heterosexuality amongst gay males nurses in the larger Boston area in the mid 80's) LOL good analysis mate!
This movie is interesting at many levels. Note Francois had written a book about the "mystical philosophy of Simone Weil" (herself a precocious learner) so it's quite understable that he is attracted by a student as brilliant as Mathilde. Mathilde reads Francois's book and tries to live up to his expectations, to the point of emulating Simone Weil and starving herself to death.
Don't be so judgmental. Some people as the movie entitled them "are prisons of their destiny". As much as you want to skip this sort of situation --you just can't. The movie has a clear message that this kind of relationship is not okay. It's just a jumble of feelings that the characters can't help but feel toward one another.
I'm sorry if it sickens you but from this point of view some people may learn to escape from these situations if they ever approach them in their lives.
@TheGloriousMuse That girl was in trouble. Teachers are in that special category of reporter. They are not meant to be fooling around with their students. If she was of age, then it wouldn't have been as wrong but still immoral. Yes, the age difference is the big problem. If he was 24 and she 19, and he was her college instructor, then I'd have no problem with it. As long as he wasn't giving her good grades she didn't deserve. I concede there is a big difference between statutary rape and rape.
@SocraticTruths Is this SO wrong that a teacher and his student have a relationship together ? If it's abuse of authority, yes it is really wrong, of course. But in the movie he is in love with her, with her mind, her history... And finally she is maybe the one who abuses. Of course the fact he become obsessed is not good neither.. But what is striking is not the fact that he is his teacher, but the fact he is more than twice her age. If he were 24 would you think the same way ?
@711Myself Maybe I was a bit offensive too with my comment. I actually liked the movie. I had a similar reaction to when I saw that Johnny Depp-Brando one concerning snuff films. Good movies. Entertaining. And whatnot. But the endings were so twisted, I felt dirty inside. Yeah, this movie would not do well in America. This isn't about being prudish. The phrase exploitation film comes to mind.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful movie with us!
I love the ending. It was sad but I loved the message.
"L'océan, François, il y a l'océan."

@SocraticTruths Thanks god this movie was not filmed in the US. Otherwise, the director & actors would have been cruxified.
