On our way from Palm Bay and Melbourne to Highland Beach, we took a detour into Vero Beach over the old Merrill Barber Causeway over the Indian River on the ICW. You can see the new bridge under construction a couple of blocks north of the old bridge. The new bridge was completed early in 1995 and the old drawbridge, originally built in 1951, was completely removed. NEW INFO (2009): I just did a Google Map of this area on the mainland side at Royal Palm Point... You would never know that there is where the old bridge approach was!

  • Thanks for the memory! I miss that bridge.

  • I caught a black drum near the bridge station nazi guy. He would stop trafic for shits and giggles. I'm not kidding; this guy would stop the bridge for a canoe. It was crazy.

  • I remember riding my bike over that every single day to school! Brings back some wild memories. Thanks for sharing.

  • Just wondering, was your friend the guy that worked at beachland elementary? I have lived here my whole life, I remember that from probably the early 90's. I'm very sorry for your friend and you. RIP
