World-renowned author and trainer, Jean Donaldson, demonstrates how to use targeting and desensitization to condition her dog, Buffy, to enjoy wearing her Gentle Leader™ head collar.

A few quick sessions help Buffy choose to wear the Gentle Leader ™ and even look forward to it. The Gentle Leader then becomes the predictor of other good things, including walks and going on outings.

The pay-off for gradual desensitization is that the dog enjoys wearing her Gentle Leader™.

The amount of time that it took to desensitize Buffy to wearing her Gentle Leader ™, which will last her entire lifetime, was less than it took to brush her out that morning.

  • This comment is clearly biased against the use of food for training purposes. Dogs are an animal just like whales and seals and are primarily motivated by the activities which are their Primary Reinforcers...i.e. food, mating, etc.

Our four dogs have been trained using cheese and hot-dog products for years without showing any ill effects as a result. Our 15 year old shepherd and 15 year old cattle dog mix (both super skinny and with the bodies of 8 year olds) are a testament to this.

  • I just wanted to thank you for this video. I tried your method and my puppy went from hating his gentle leader to loving it in only 10 minutes! Thanks!

  • Im surprised that anyone would have anything but praise for jean Donaldson-do you people know who she is?! Proud to say that she is from Canada! LOVE the explanations, have read 4 of your books, and send this link to many to help them, help their dogs lovingly. Keep up the great work Jean!

  • @80spopQueen People using this method count calories and adjust calories at meal time to be able to use high value treats in situations as this. I use my dog's meals for training, if I need a higher value treat such as chicken or steak I adjust dinner calories. Using their meals as training treats builds on the relationship and keeps the dog from getting too many calories and gaining weight.

  • I have a four month old Chocolate Lab that has totally responded to training with food. He is amazing and we have a relationship where he is not afraid of me. Maybe it does not work for all dogs, but I'll tell you labs are very motivated by food. He already comes, sits, stays, heels, whoa's, out (kitchen), kennel, no bark, fetch, everything I have asked of him with relatively little effort. I actually used the exact same method for getting him to accept the Gentle Lead. Worked for me.

  • positive reinforcement is not the only aspect in a healthy canine relationship
