CBS was absolutely awful on 9/11. Gumbel is too stunned to speak and actually provide perspective. His partners sit there in dead silence letting him bumble all over the place. Guys like Charlie Gibson and Jim Ryan (WNYW here in NYC) were brilliant. Haines from CNBC also.

@bloodredeyes666 I didn't know anyone at the time who wasn't aware of how many enemies we had or any issues "facing the reality...." as you put it. All ya had to do was watch the evening news once. There where acts of terrorism occuring all around the world on a fairly regular basis. I think you're right about people having a hard time comprehending the scale of this act of terrorism though, largely the U.S. had been spared & then this happend, it was stunning.

He's asking "How do you know it was on purpose?" because, on a personal level, many people have a hard time believing that things like this could happen. I suspect a lot of Americans were hoping, praying that it was a fluke, some sort of navigational error or something - anything to keep from facing the reality that there are people out there who hate this country and everyone in it, and want us dead.
