Gary Cooper once said that Brian Donlevy lived the part of Sergeant Markoff, off and on set. He was his character for the whole of the shoot. Obviously took method acting very seriously. A father of a friend once saw Gary Cooper off set and said he was covered in make-up, he swore blind that he wasn't shooting a film!
